GIS What about GIS applications and iPOGO?
GIS data, that has been digitized from old maps and processed through many of the popular GIS packages, has perpetuated the problem due to the lack of precision that we have always required in surveying, as well as the lack of knowledgeable GIS operators with surveying experience. These packages typically clean up the line work by arbitrarily snapping corners (or nodes) and lines (or arcs, links,etc) together based on a user defined tolerance without regard to the true point or property corner. Furthermore, there is usually little or no documentation (or metadata) telling you which corners were digitized, which were surveyed, and how many of those were rubber-sheeted into a local coordinate system that is falsely identified as State Plane Coordinates. Many of the most expensive GIS packages do not support standard surveying coordinate geometry calculations, nor do they handle true arcs or curves. The arcs or curves are usually broken into line segments for ease of storage, computation and overlay processing. Obviously, this destroys your survey data in the process. iPOGO, on the other hand, is true survey computation and boundary analysis software. During the DXF export, all of the linework is layered based on user defined features, layers, and colors. All of the exported polygons/polylines have been constructed by the user with standard surveying commands, not by the GIS software, and therefore retain your survey's integrity. All polygons/polylines are exported with the feature code, figure identifier, and figure description attached as extended entity data. Typical figure identifiers might be a tax parcel number, a water line number, a highway number or name, etc. Several CAD and GIS programs can read this extended entitiy data directly and convert it into other forms of attribute data suitalble for storage in a database or object data table. And best of all, your iPOGO command file contains your complete documentation on every property corner or survey point that you have found or computed in the performance of the survey. iPOGO makes it easy to provide the GIS community with your accurate survey information in an efficient format that they can actually use.
